Can I use Benzyl Alcohol with Benzylalcohol DHA?
Works well together
Benzyl Alcohol and Benzylalcohol DHA are generally compatible and can be layered in the same routine. As always, introduce one new active at a time and watch how your skin responds.
Benzyl AlcoholPreservative
- ✓Broad-spectrum preservation against bacteria and yeasts
- ✓Can serve as a solvent for fragrances
- ⚠EU-regulated fragrance allergen (Annex III) — must be declared on-label above 0.001% in leave-on and 0.01% in rinse-off products
- ⚠Can cause allergic contact dermatitis in sensitized individuals
- ⚠Metabolizes to benzoic acid in skin; safe at permitted levels (≤1% EU Annex V)
Benzylalcohol DHAPreservative
- ✓Paraben-free preservative blend of benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid, effective against bacteria and yeast and weakly against mold
- ⚠Effective mainly at low-to-mid pH (roughly 2-6); loses efficacy at high pH
- ⚠The benzyl alcohol component can be sensitizing for individuals with fragrance-component sensitivities at higher concentrations
- ⚠Not permitted in aerosol products in some regions (e.g. Brazil, EU)
