Can I use Lactic Acid with Papain?
Use with care
Lactic Acid and Papain are both potent actives that increase cell turnover or lower skin pH. Layering them in the same routine can over-exfoliate, compromise the skin barrier, and cause irritation. If you want both, use them on alternate days or at different times (one AM, one PM).
Lactic AcidExfoliant
- ✓Smooths texture
- ✓Hydrating for an acid
- ✓Brightens
- ⚠Sun sensitivity
- ⚠Possible irritation
PapainExfoliant
- ✓Dissolves dead skin cells by breaking down keratin proteins enzymatically
- ✓Smooths and brightens skin texture without abrasion
- ✓Promotes cell turnover and reveals fresher skin
- ⚠IgE-mediated allergy documented: can sensitize skin even with repeated low-level exposure
- ⚠Degrades tight junction proteins (zonula occludens-1, claudin-4, occludin), impairing skin barrier integrity
- ⚠Sensitization risk is independent of enzymatic activity — the protein structure itself is allergenic
