Ornithine
Ornithine (L-ornithine) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid and key intermediate in the urea cycle. In skin biology, it serves as a precursor to proline and hydroxyproline (essential amino acids in collagen) and contributes to the natural moisturizing factor of the stratum corneum. In cosmetics it is used as a skin-conditioning humectant, typically at low concentrations in premium formulas alongside other amino acids and actives.

Benefits
- ✓Amino acid that acts as a skin-conditioning agent, contributing to surface smoothness and moisture balance in formulations
- ✓Participates in the natural moisturizing factor (NMF) pool of the stratum corneum, contributing to natural hydration maintenance
- ✓Metabolic precursor to proline and hydroxyproline (collagen amino acids) — in vitro evidence suggests ornithine supplementation may support collagen turnover in skin cells
