Humectant ingredient

Trichosanthes Kirilowii Root Extract

Trichosanthes kirilowii root extract (Tian Hua Fen) is derived from the starchy root of the Chinese snake gourd, used in TCM for its cooling and fluid-promoting properties. The cosmetic extract provides humectant moisture-binding and mild anti-inflammatory benefits from its polysaccharide and sterol fractions. Properly processed cosmetic extracts are not expected to retain biologically active trichosanthin.

Also known as: Tian Hua Fen Extract, Chinese Snake Gourd Root Extract

Benefits

  • High polysaccharide content delivers strong humectant activity, drawing moisture into the skin and improving suppleness
  • Sterols and polysaccharide fractions exert anti-inflammatory effects, helping calm irritated or sensitized skin
  • Starch-rich, emollient character contributes skin-conditioning and softening properties consistent with its traditional use as a skin treatment in TCM

Watch for

  • The crude plant root contains trichosanthin, a ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) with cytotoxic properties when injected — cosmetic-grade aqueous extracts undergo processing that effectively removes this protein; finished products are not expected to carry the RIP hazard
  • Pregnant individuals should avoid as a precaution given the plant's traditional associations, though topical exposure risk from a processed extract is negligible
