Extract from Gynostemma pentaphyllum (jiaogulan), a climbing vine used in traditional Asian medicine. Contains gypenosides (structurally similar to ginsenosides) with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and adaptogenic properties.
Extract from Harungana madagascariensis (harungana), a small African tree with blood-red resin. Contains xanthones and polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant activity.
A flavonoid-rich botanical extract used as an antioxidant and soothing agent.
Immortelle (everlasting flower) extract, L'Occitane's signature botanical, rich in antioxidants and valued for soothing and regenerative properties.
A full aerial extract of Helichrysum italicum (curry plant/immortelle) using both flowers and stems. Provides a richer polyphenol and arzanol profile than flower-only extract. Key functional ingredient in L'Occitane's Immortelle Divine Cream alongside separate Helichrysum Italicum Flower Oil.
An extract from the flowers of Hemerocallis fulva (common orange daylily), containing flavonoids and phenolic compounds used in cosmetics for antioxidant and skin-conditioning properties.
Hesperidin is a flavanone glycoside found primarily in citrus fruit peel — particularly orange and lemon. It is one of the most studied citrus bioflavonoids, with documented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vascular-protective properties. In cosmetics, hesperidin is used for its antioxidant activity and potential contribution to brightening and anti-aging effects. It is distinct from the semisynthetic Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone, which is more specifically used for capillary strengthening.
An extract from hibiscus flowers rich in anthocyanins, citric, and malic acids with antioxidant, brightening, and mild exfoliating properties.
Extract from Himanthalia elongata (sea spaghetti), a brown algae harvested from Atlantic coasts. Rich in phenolic compounds and fucoidan polysaccharides, providing antioxidant activity and skin-conditioning properties in marine-inspired skincare formulas.
A carotenoid-rich sea buckthorn fruit extract delivering antioxidants and skin-nourishing nutrients.
An extract from the whole grain of two-row barley (Hordeum distichon) containing beta-glucans, ferulic acid, and polyphenols used for antioxidant and conditioning effects in skincare.
A protein hydrolysate of the astaxanthin-rich red-phase microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, yielding skin-penetrating peptide fragments alongside the algae's native astaxanthin carotenoid for antioxidant and skin-conditioning effects.
Hydrolyzed Proanthocyanidin is a hydrolyzed form of proanthocyanidin (condensed tannins / oligomeric proanthocyanidins, OPCs), typically sourced from grape seed, maritime pine bark, or bilberry. Hydrolysis reduces polymer chain length, improving bioavailability and skin penetration. Proanthocyanidins are exceptionally potent antioxidants with documented MMP-inhibitory and collagen cross-linking activity, making them effective anti-aging and skin-firming actives beyond simple radical scavenging.
A multifunctional antioxidant that calms skin and enhances the performance of preservative systems.
A synthetic CoQ10 analogue (idebenone) in which the isoprene side chain is replaced by a shorter 10-carbon chain bearing a terminal hydroxyl group, improving its solubility and cellular membrane penetration relative to ubiquinone.
An extract from Hypericum erectum (Japanese St. John's Wort). Contains hypericin, pseudohypericin, and quercetin derivatives with antioxidant and soothing properties. Widely used in Elixir and other Shiseido brands.
An extract from hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) herb rich in flavonoids and phenolic acids with antioxidant and mild soothing properties.
Leaf extract from Ilex paraguariensis (yerba mate), a South American plant rich in xanthines (caffeine, theobromine) and chlorogenic acid antioxidants.
Extract from Inonotus obliquus (Chaga), a parasitic polypore mushroom that grows primarily on birch trees in cold Northern climates. The sclerotium is exceptionally dense in antioxidant compounds: beta-glucans, melanins, betulinic acid absorbed from the birch host, inotodiol, and polyphenols. Used in K-beauty anti-aging formulas targeting oxidative stress and free-radical skin damage.
Extract from the rhizome of Iris germanica (German iris / orris root). Contains irisone, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds with antioxidant and mild skin-brightening properties. Used in brightening and anti-aging formulations.
An extract from the blue flag iris (Iris versicolor) containing isoflavones and flavonoid polyphenols used for antioxidant and brightening benefits.
An extract from the seeds (kernel) of Juglans regia (English walnut), rich in polyphenols including ellagitannins and juglone, used for antioxidant and skin-conditioning properties; potential sensitization from juglone should be noted.
