Every ingredient SkinAtlas knows about — all 2402 of them. What each one does, what it works well with, and what to watch for.
An extract of European mistletoe (Viscum album) fermented with Saccharomyces yeast; fermentation improves the bioavailability of mistletoe's antioxidant compounds for use in prestige multi-ferment ampoules.
Kombucha, a ferment of black tea by Saccharomyces yeast and Xylinum bacteria, rich in organic acids, polyphenols, B vitamins, and amino acids used for antioxidant and skin-conditioning benefits.
An extract from sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) that naturally contains glycolic acid and polysaccharides, providing mild exfoliation and humectant moisture retention.
A lightweight plant oil pressed from safflower seeds, high in linoleic acid (omega-6), used as an emollient that supports the skin barrier and absorbs quickly.
Extract of Salicornia herbacea (glasswort or sea pickle), a salt-tolerant coastal plant used in skincare for its humectant and antioxidant mineral-rich content.
An oil-soluble BHA that exfoliates inside the pore.
A salicylic acid ester of phytosphingosine that combines sphingolipid barrier-repair activity with soothing and mild anti-aging properties, shown in clinical studies to improve wrinkles and ECM protein levels.
Bark extract of white willow (Salix alba), containing salicin and anti-inflammatory polyphenols used to soothe, provide antioxidant protection, and support gentle skin renewal.
A steam-distilled hydrosol (aqueous distillate) of white willow (Salix alba) bark, distinct from concentrated Salix alba bark extract; used as a lightweight, alcohol-free toner phase with mild astringent, soothing, and skin-conditioning properties.
Willow bark extract, a natural source of salicin (a salicylic-acid precursor). Acts as a mild BHA-like exfoliant with added soothing polyphenols.
Extract derived from salon (Salvia officinalis/sage), used in traditional skincare.
An extract derived from the seeds of Salvia hispanica (chia), native to Central America and increasingly grown worldwide. Unlike Chia Seed Oil (which concentrates omega-3/omega-6 fatty acids), the seed extract brings water-soluble and semi-polar fractions: polyphenols (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, flavonoids), mucilage polysaccharides, and peptides. The extract provides antioxidant protection and mild anti-inflammatory benefits. Distinct from Salvia Hispanica Seed Oil (the fixed oil, pressing-derived) — different composition and different INCI designation.
An extract of common sage (Salvia officinalis) leaves rich in carnosic acid, rosmarinic acid, and phenolic diterpenes. Used for antioxidant, soothing, and skin-conditioning properties in toners and essences.
Essential oil steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of Salvia officinalis (common sage), used primarily as a fragrance ingredient; contains camphor, 1,8-cineole, alpha-thujone, and beta-thujone, with the thujone content restricted under EU cosmetic regulations.
An aqueous, glycolic, or hydroglycolic extract of the whole herb of Salvia sclarea (clary sage), distinct from its essential oil (Salvia Sclarea Oil). The extract concentrates water-soluble polyphenols — especially rosmarinic acid, luteolin, and apigenin — while leaving behind the volatile terpene constituents (thujone, camphor) responsible for the oil's fragrance and safety restrictions. Used in K-beauty and European skincare for mild antioxidant and soothing benefits.
An essential oil steam-distilled from clary sage (Salvia sclarea) flowers and leaves, used primarily as a fragrance ingredient with mild antimicrobial properties.
Extract from elderflower (Sambucus nigra), long prized in European folk medicine for brightening and skin-calming effects. Its flavonoid content provides both antioxidant protection and a luminous effect.
Elderberry seed oil, a conditioning emollient.
An extract from the root of Sanguisorba officinalis (great burnet), rich in ellagitannins, gallic acid, and flavonoids. Provides antioxidant, soothing, and astringent benefits in luxury creams.
The essential oil steam-distilled from the heartwood of Santalum album (Indian white sandalwood), prized for its distinctive creamy, warm, woody fragrance and containing santalols with mild anti-inflammatory properties; distinct from the Santalum album wood extract already in the KB.
An extract from Indian sandalwood (Santalum album) wood, valued for its distinctive warm, creamy scent and mild skin-soothing properties. Contains alpha- and beta-santalol. Used in luxury Japanese skincare.
Extract from the fruit of Sapindus mukorossi (Chinese soapberry / soapnut tree), which grows across South and East Asia. The pericarp is naturally rich in triterpenoid saponins that function as gentle, plant-derived surfactants. Used in Ayurvedic tradition as a natural hair and skin cleanser. In contemporary skincare, it appears as a mild natural cleansing agent and antimicrobial booster in multi-functional formulas.
Extract from the fruit of Sapindus mukurossi (soapberry), which contains natural saponins. These saponins act as gentle surfactants and also have mild anti-inflammatory properties. Used in Elixir Retino Power and Spot Clear Serum.
Leaf extract of common soapwort (Saponaria officinalis), a saponin-rich plant used for its gentle surfactant cleansing and mild skin-soothing properties.
